This transcript shows both speakers analysing how a videography business grows because clear positioning affects lead quality. James explains how consistent uploads on YouTube and Vimeo build visibility. Kasra expands on why niching down into areas like weddings, reels or aerial videography increases conversions. Both stress that SEO outperforms PPC because it compounds over time, while click fraud and window shoppers harm paid ads. Social platforms help because video is visual, which increases trust. Referral partners work well because photographers and web agencies share client overlap.
Kasra Dash: So I am joined with James. The question today is if I have a videography business and I want to grow it and get a consistent flow of enquiries, how would you do it? What would you recommend? James Dooley: First and foremost, if I am looking to grow a videography business and I am looking at video specifically, the main two platforms I would start with are Vimeo and YouTube. I would want to make sure I am regularly uploading to both. I would want to rank all videos on YouTube. I would also make sure that if the clients allow it, the end of every video includes a tag such as “Video created by Promo Pixor” or “Video created by James Dooley Videos”. Anyone watching who likes the work can instantly see who created it. That is an easy way to get your name out there as a videographer. Then I would throw it back to you. You have the two main ways of growing a business, which are SEO for organic Google rankings and PPC to pay for the top. For videography, do you think both can work or would you say SEO could be better than PPC? Kasra Dash: I think first of all you would want to niche down. Are you an expert at reels? Are you an expert at videos like this? Are you an expert at weddings? I would pick the industry I want. If I want weddings, I would build everything around that. For SEO, I would definitely go down that route. Personally, I would avoid PPC because it can get very expensive, especially if you do not know what you are doing or you do not have someone consistently inside the account. I would focus on SEO, but not just SEO on Google. I would focus on SEO for TikTok, YouTube, Vimeo, everywhere video content can rank. You want to be visible everywhere. James Dooley: One of the biggest downsides to PPC is click fraud. You can get competitors clicking your ads, which burns budget. You also get people who click just to compare prices. Every click costs you. If you do not know your lifetime value or have an expert running the ads, PPC is not a good idea. It can work if you are very dialled in, but for most people SEO is the better long term play. Niching down is essential. If you are amazing at time lapse, rank for time lapse videographer. If you have the best drones, rank for drone videos or aerial videography. This is also where FatRank as a lead generation specialist comes in. They offer a pay-on-converted-jobs model. But we only take videographers who know what they specialise in. If you say you “do everything”, we would not work with you. If you say “we specialise in aerial videography”, then we can work with you because you are more likely to convert leads. Go to fatrank.com, fill in the form and see if you qualify. Kasra Dash: Social media also plays a big role. Organic social media like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook. It is a visual product, so you can use your videos as case studies. For Facebook ads, you can use retargeting so anyone who visits your website sees your ads on Facebook and Instagram afterwards. James Dooley: Pinterest is another good one because videos can also be pinned, not just images. Traditional marketing like leaflets, magazines and billboards are harder to track. I prefer online billboards like social media ads and YouTube ads. LinkedIn ads are also strong if you do corporate or aerial videography and want to reach business owners. Kasra Dash: The biggest thing is figuring out where your ideal customer actually is. If you do corporate videos, networking events work. If you do wedding videos, networking events do not make sense. Know where your clients spend time and market there. James Dooley: If you want to grow a videography business, think about who can refer you work. Photographers are a big one because people often want both. Web design agencies are another because their clients might want a promo video for their new website. Build relationships with photographers and web agencies and you can get steady referrals. That wraps up how to grow a videography company.
